Manager Keith Hill has reflected on a very positive September for the club ahead of the game against Portsmouth.
Speaking to the Official Site Hill travelled back to the game at the end of August where in his eyes we picked up a more than deserved draw against Oxford United who were top of the table at the point, and he feels that this result on the back of the previous defeat to Plymouth gave the players a nice shot of confidence and that set us up nicely for the games that came last month.
'We more than out possessioned a goal scoring side and we were full of enthusiasm and confidence going into the Bury game. The players saw it as an opportunity to start invading the top seven with the run of games we had.'
And that's exactly what we did as we now sit in fifth place.
Hill says we will have games that don't go for us, and there will be games that will be exceptionally difficult, but he trusts this squad to rise to those challenges and kick on despite whatever setbacks we might face.
He's not getting too carried away, thinking we are overachieving, or have been unlucky in games, as he says we're where he feels we should be given our development as a squad and the teams we have played so far.
In fact, the best he'll go in terms of being hard done by, is in saying he feels we should've had two more points. Admittedly that would put us second in the league, but at this stage of the season it really doesn't matter as just being in the mix is good enough.
The best bit for Hill is he still doesn't feel we are playing to our best, and there is plenty of improvement left to do as he doesn't feel yet that we've put in a solid 90 minute performance all season.
Of course suffered three sendings off so far this campaign hasn't helped, so it should be onwards and upwards as long as nobody gets complacent which I'm sure Hill wouldn't allow.
As for the Portsmouth game, the manager states that we aren't playing who Portsmouth used to be, their tradition or their history in the higher reaches of the league, we are playing a side now in League Two so they hold no fears for us.
We'll go there and approach it like any other game we will this season.
