Keith Hill

December 2006

Pen Pic

When Steve Parkin and Tony Ford left the club on December 16th 2006 the day after another dismal away defeat, Keith Hill was given the unenviable task of managing the team on a temporary basis. However, such was Hill's impact at the Dale that by the start of January he was given the job on a full time basis. Hill had previously been at the club as a player and had returned to become Head of Youth before his promotion to first team affairs.

Hill wasted no time in bringing in former Dale Defender Gareth Griffiths as his Assistant on a temporary basis. Hill's first game was away at League 2 pace-setters MK Dons, despite losing the game 2-1 Dale put in a much improved performance and were very unlucky not to grab at least a point from the game. Hill had already set out his stall in terms of what he could bring to the club, against the Dons he introduced Callum Warbuton and Joe Thompson both of whom had seen little first team action. It seemed to be a stroke of genius from the new boss, with Dale leading until the 80th minute, sadly the Dons equalised before Stanton scored an Own Goal to gift the Dons a late lead.

The next game saw Dale go 2 goals behind against Wrexham before eventually gaining a point. The next two games saw back-to-back 4-0 victories and were instrumental in Hill getting the job on a full time basis. Not only had results improved Dale were also playing much better football and seemed a completely different team to the one we saw under Parkin. Hilly then brought in former midfielder Dave Flitcroft as his full-time Assistant and we haven't looked back since. For the rest of the season we were treated to some great displays with memorable victories including 5-0 victories over Macc and MK Dons and THAT 7-2 victory over Stockport.

The 2007/2008 season will be a big test for Hill in his first full season in charge. Can he be the one to finally bring the club success?
